Salamina is a 12th century BC city that was once the largest and most powerful city-kingdom in Cyprus. After the disastrous earthquake in the 4th century, the city was rebuilt under the name of Constantia, in honour of the founder of the city reconstruction – the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great. Dating from the 12th century, now closed, the Orthodox monastery of St. Andrew the Apostle arose in a place where, according to tradition, St. Andrew the Apostle stopped during his last trip to Palestine. A spring of water with healing properties appeared in the place where he stood. The fortified monastery was built in the 12th century; however, only one oldest building survived to this day – a chapel from the 15th century.
